Many cameras, smartphones, and basic photo or drawing programs will automatically save into JPG format. JPGs are 2D pixel-based ‘raster’ images, which makes them better for photographs or scans, rather than digital illustrations which are often better as ‘vector’ images. JPG is a universal format which can be opened by almost all image-viewing or -editing programs, by web browsers, and by certain other apps, and they’re supported by most devices. JPG, or JPEG, is one of the most widely used digital image formats. You can also download PSD-viewing apps if you just need to open files without making changes. However, PSD files will open with some other programs, including with Adobe creative software like Illustrator, and with Apple Preview, Google Drive and some other graphics editors.
Photoshop is a premium software that’s available on a subscription basis on its own or in Adobe’s Creative Cloud package. People particularly use the software for photo editing, and ‘photoshopping’ has become a common verb to describe any image that has been altered or airbrushed. Adobe Photoshop is used by amateur and professional photographers, graphic designers, and content creators. PSD files can create and store high resolution images with layers of formatting that can be edited individually. As the name suggests, the format was developed by Adobe specifically for its Photoshop image-editing software program.
